OMT-5 Medical Osmometer

 

OMT-5 is designated for cryoscopy measurements of effective (osmotic) biological fluid and water solution concentrations.

OMT-5 is put in the State Register as a medical technology item, it has Registration Certificate No. 29/07040903/5134-04 issued by the Health Ministry of the Russian Federation. The instrument is in the State Register for Measurement Tools, No. 26774-04.

OMT-5 is PC-focused.

Application

OMT-5 is successfully used to measure osmolality of biological fluids in the patients that are in critical conditions in emergency rooms and intensive care units.

As the osmolality of biological fluids is a fundamental index of physical and chemical processes in a human body, including the diffusion of dissolved substances or transportation of liquids via membranes, the knowledge of osmolality for different biological fluids is fundamental in forecasting fluid and electrolyte balance and in intensive care monitoring.

Clinical application of the osmometry of biological fluids is reasonable for:

• diagnostics of osmotic balance problems; hyper and hypo osmotic syndromes (in diabetes, renal deficiency, infusion therapy, diagnostics of various urgent conditions);
• tactics definition and estimation of infusion therapy, parenteral feeding efficiency;
• control of osmotic balance status in dehydration therapy;
• toxemia level estimation;
• estimation of status for the central osmoregulation link (diagnostics of diabetes insipidus);
• estimation of osmoregulation renal function status: concentration and water excretion functions.

Knowledge of blood serum osmolality enables the calculation of the so-called osmolality discriminant, i.e., he difference between actual (osmometer measured) and rated plasma osmolality (total sum of concentrations for plasma's ions and low molecular substances), that value enabling the estimation of toxemy level and select the correct treatment.

Increased osmolality or blood serum is an important indicator of alcohol intoxication.

Osmometry is irreplaceable for quality control system:
